A Plea for Help: Asmaa’s Story of Survival in Gaza
In the heart of Khan Yunis, Gaza, Asmaa Mazen Rabah Hammad fights every day to keep her family alive. Once, she and her husband, Ahmed, had a home, a business, and a sense of security. But the war took everything from them—except their will to survive.
Their tent, once their only shelter, was torn apart by the harsh winter storms, forcing them into a makeshift zinc room with no doors or windows. It offers no real protection from the cold, the rain, or the dangers of war. They now live with Ahmed’s relatives, but their struggles continue to mount.
Asmaa is the sole provider for her family, as Ahmed can no longer work due to a severe vitamin B12 deficiency, which causes nerve weakness and dizziness. Their children suffer as well. Twelve-year-old Nabil was born with a hole in his neck, making swallowing difficult and leaving him vulnerable to severe chest infections. Seven-year-old Hussein battles osteoporosis, kidney problems, and a narrowing of the ureter—he now requires urgent surgery.
Their suffering does not end there. War stole their two-year-old son, Mohammed, when the collapsing health system failed to save him. The pain of his loss is immeasurable, yet Asmaa must keep going for her six surviving children—Ghaida (14), Nabil (12), Alaa (10), Hussein (7), Eileen (5), and baby Hour, just three months old.
Once, they had a home, a business, and a future. Now, they have nothing. Their home, Ahmed’s electrical appliance showroom, and their car were all destroyed. There is no stable income, no access to medical care, and no proper shelter.
Asmaa is reaching out for help—not just for herself, but for her family’s survival. They need food, medical care, a safe home, and the chance to rebuild their lives.
Any contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference. In a world that has turned its back on them, you can be their hope. Will you stand with Asmaa and her children?
